Best of 2022

Best of 2022

2022 was the year when we all collectively learned that “back to normal” is less of a destination and more of an abstract concept – like NFTs, but with slightly more substance. After two years of perfecting our hermit impressions, we finally emerged from our cocoons, armed with hand sanitizer and the kind of social anxiety that comes from forgetting how to make small talk in person.

Magic Wand

4-panel comic by War and Peas.
Panel 1: A group of witches sit in a circle around a fire under the night sky. One witch says, "To abolish the patriarchy once and for all..."
Panel 2: Another witch, holding a wand, adds, "...raise your wands, sisters!"
Panel 3: Several witches lift their wands, while one holds up what looks like a vibrator (magic wand).
Panel 4: The witch holding the vibrator looks slightly awkward, while the other witches continue their ritual under the moon.

Remember comic festivals? They came roaring back like a forgotten Netflix show getting an unexpected new season. Fantasy Basel welcomed us with open arms, and Comic Salon Erlangen taught Jonathan the valuable lesson that not all summer festivals end in sunshine and signatures – some end in tissues and throat lozenges. But even the worst cold couldn’t dampen the pure joy of seeing actual human faces (the bottom halves included!) and hearing real, non-digitized laughter. The journey to Bangalore Comic Con felt like a victory lap for humanity’s resilience, or at least for our collective ability to fill out travel forms.

Majestic Mountain

Funny 4-panel webcomic about competing mountains

Just when we thought we were writing the epilogue to the pandemic chapter, history threw in a plot twist that felt too dark even for our comics. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine reminded us that peace, like a good Wi-Fi connection, is something you don’t fully appreciate until it’s gone. But Ukraine, expected to fold like a cheap lawn chair, stood firm like the last panel in a superhero comic – defiant, determined, and surprisingly resilient.

Strange Party

Funny 4-panel-comic about a halloween party and someone suffering from Alzheimers

Meanwhile, somewhere in the world, humanity welcomed its 8 billionth member – a mind-bending number that makes you wonder if we should start looking into real estate on Mars. Though considering our track record with this planet, maybe we should stick to fixing what we’ve got.

Lucky

Funny 4-panel-comic: 1. Panel: A ladbuy and a praying mantis stand next to each other. They're kids and both wear backpacks. The ladybug says: "Oh, Timmy, look!" 2. Panel: You can see a dead praying mantis with its head eaten off. 3. Panel: The ladybug says: "Looks like someone got lucky last night!" 4. Timmy is sweating and says: "Yeah, haha"

The year proved that reality has a way of outdoing even the most imaginative storytellers. Between the return of in-person events, geopolitical upheavals, and population milestones, 2022 felt like several years crammed into twelve months – a narrative density that would make any comic book editor proud.
